Every few months an Indian streaming show arrives with enough buzz that you know your group chat will be talking about it by Saturday. This week it is Akka, a gangster saga from YRF Entertainment that puts Keerthy Suresh and Radhika Apte on opposite sides of a power struggle. It premieres on Netflix on Friday, October 30, and the trailer, released on October 21, has already set up the main hook: two women, one kingdom, and no room for both of them at the top.

Here is everything that has been officially confirmed so far, plus a few honest thoughts on why this one could be worth your weekend.

Akka release date and where to watch

  • Platform: Netflix
  • Premiere date: Friday, October 30, 2026
  • Producer: YRF Entertainment, the streaming arm of Yash Raj Films
  • Writer and director: Dharmaraj Shetty
  • Executive producers: Aditya Chopra, Yogendra Mogre and Akshaye Widhani

What is Akka about?

The series is set in Pernuru, a fictional kingdom ruled through powerful houses where women hold authority and guard it fiercely. According to Netflix, the order that has kept Pernuru together for generations is starting to crack. An outsider challenges the legacy that has long ruled the place, loyalties get tested, and old wounds open up again.

At the centre are two women. Keerthy Suresh plays Bhavani, and Radhika Apte plays Rudra. Netflix describes them as “two formidable women whose differing ambitions and beliefs fuel a gripping rivalry.” The themes listed in the official announcement are power, loyalty, family and revenge, which is about as classic as gangster drama gets. The twist is who is holding the guns and the keys.

That is a meaningful change for the genre in India. Most of our crime sagas, on screen and on streaming, have been built around fathers, sons and brothers fighting over territory. Women usually show up as wives, mothers or victims. A show where the women are the power centre, and the fight is between two of them, has a lot of room to do something fresh, if the writing holds up.

The cast

Alongside the two leads, the confirmed ensemble includes Tanvi Azmi, Mahesh Manjrekar, Anshuman Pushkar and Monica Panwar, among others. Netflix has not yet revealed who plays which role beyond Bhavani and Rudra, so we will not guess.

Tanvi Azmi is one of those actors who makes every scene feel heavier in the best way, and Mahesh Manjrekar has spent decades playing men you would not want to owe money to. Anshuman Pushkar and Monica Panwar have both built strong reputations on streaming, so the supporting bench looks solid.

Keerthy Suresh as Bhavani

Keerthy Suresh is a big name in Tamil and Telugu cinema and won the National Film Award for Best Actress for Mahanati, the biopic of the actress Savitri. She made her Hindi film debut with Baby John in 2024. Akka gives her something different again: a lead role in a long-form crime drama aimed at a national audience.

Speaking about her character in Netflix’s announcement, she said: “Bhavani is a woman who knows what she stands for and will go to great lengths to protect her legacy.” She also said that beneath Bhavani’s strength and authority “are choices that are never easy, especially when the stakes are so high.”

That is a useful clue. Bhavani sounds like the one defending the old order, which usually makes for the more conflicted character in a story like this.

Radhika Apte as Rudra

Radhika Apte is no stranger to Netflix. She was part of Sacred Games, Lust Stories and Ghoul, and her work in Lust Stories earned her an International Emmy nomination. She has a knack for playing women who refuse to be boxed in, and Rudra sounds like more of that.

In the same announcement, she described Rudra as “someone who refuses to be defined by the circumstances she finds herself in,” adding that the character “is fierce, has her own ambitions, and is willing to challenge the established order.” She also made a point worth keeping in mind before you start watching: “the conflict isn’t simply about who holds power; it’s also about the different beliefs, loyalties, and personal stakes that drive each character.”

What the director has said

Dharmaraj Shetty, who wrote and directed the series, said what drew him to Akka “was the chance to give the gangster genre a world with its own rules.” He called Pernuru “a world shaped by generations of women, where power, legacy, and rivalry play out in fresh and unexpected ways.”

Building a made-up world is a smart choice. It frees the show from having to match a real city’s politics or history, and it lets the production design do a lot of storytelling. The trailer leans into that with a look that feels deliberately larger than life.

Where Akka fits in the Netflix and YRF partnership

Akka is the latest in a run of Netflix titles made with YRF Entertainment. The earlier ones include the documentary series The Romantics, the Bhopal gas tragedy drama The Railway Men, the period film Maharaj and the crime thriller Mandala Murders. That is a fairly strong track record, especially The Railway Men, which was widely praised. Expectations for production quality are high.

Why people are excited, and what could go wrong

The appeal is obvious: two strong performers, a genre Indian audiences love, and a premise that flips the usual setup. Keerthy and Radhika also come from different film industries and very different acting styles, which could make their scenes together crackle.

The risk is equally familiar. Gangster sagas on streaming often start strong and then sag in the middle, stretching a six-hour story into eight. A fictional kingdom can also feel like a set rather than a place if the writing does not give it texture. We will find out on Friday whether Akka has the story to match its premise.

What else is streaming the same weekend

Akka is not alone on October 30. Netflix also has Meethe Mein Kya Hai, a Hindi family drama set during a Diwali gathering at Nani’s house, starring Rohini Hattangadi and Ritwik Bhowmik. Vijay Sethupathi’s Tamil film Baththa arrives on Netflix on October 29, a month after its theatrical release. On Apple TV, the crime thriller Nocturne stars Liev Schreiber, Zazie Beetz and Stephen Graham.

Should you watch it?

If you enjoy crime drama with strong characters, yes, at least the first two episodes. Give it time to build Pernuru before judging it. And if the Bhavani-Rudra rivalry lands the way the trailer promises, this could be the Indian series people are still discussing well into November.
