ETIAS Travel Authorization Explained: What US, UK and Canadian Travelers Need to Know in 2026

ETIAS Travel Authorization

If you are planning a trip to Europe, you have probably seen warnings that Americans, Britons and Canadians will soon need permission before they fly. That permission is ETIAS, the European Travel Information and Authorisation System. This ETIAS travel authorization guide explains what it is, who will need it, what it will cost, and, most importantly for 2026 trips, why you do not need it yet.

ETIAS Travel Authorization: The Short Answer for 2026

As of October 2026, ETIAS is not in operation. The official EU website states that no applications are being collected and that the EU will announce the start date several months before launch. Earlier official material pointed to a start in the last quarter of 2026, but that timing has since been removed, and UK travel industry body ABTA said in October 2026 that there is currently no official launch date.

In practical terms, if you are traveling to Europe this winter or next spring, you do not need an ETIAS, and you cannot get one. Any website that asks you to pay for an ETIAS today is not official.

What ETIAS Is, and What It Is Not

ETIAS is a pre-travel authorization for visitors who do not need a visa to enter Europe. It is similar in idea to the US ESTA or the UK’s own Electronic Travel Authorisation. It is not a visa. You will fill out a short online form, answer security and health questions, pay a fee, and get an approval linked to your passport.

When it starts, ETIAS will apply to visa-exempt travelers heading to 30 European countries. These are the Schengen area countries plus Cyprus. Ireland is not part of the system, and has its own entry rules.

The 30 countries covered

Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czechia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland. One authorization will cover all of them, so you will not need a separate approval for each country on a multi-stop trip.

Who will need ETIAS

Citizens of countries that can visit the Schengen area without a visa, including:

  • United States
  • United Kingdom
  • Canada
  • Australia, New Zealand, Japan and many others

EU citizens will not need it, and neither will people who already hold a valid Schengen visa or a residence permit for one of the participating countries.

How Much ETIAS Will Cost

The fee has been set at EUR 20, up from the EUR 7 that was originally planned. The European Commission says the increase reflects inflation and the cost of running the system. Applicants under 18 or over 70 will not pay the fee, though they will still need an authorization. Certain family members of EU citizens are also exempt from the fee.

How Long ETIAS Will Be Valid

An approved ETIAS will be valid for three years, or until the passport you used to apply expires, whichever comes first. During that time you can make as many trips as you like, but the usual short-stay rule still applies: no more than 90 days in any 180-day period.

If you get a new passport, you will need a new ETIAS. That is worth remembering if your passport is due for renewal soon.

How the Application Will Work

Once the system opens, you will apply only through the official ETIAS website or the official mobile app. Based on what the EU has published, you should expect to provide:

  • Your passport details
  • Personal information, such as name, date and place of birth, and address
  • Your education and current job
  • Your first planned country of stay
  • Answers to questions on past criminal convictions, travel to conflict zones and previous immigration decisions

The EU expects most applications to be processed within minutes. Some could take longer if more information is needed, so it will be smart to apply well before you book non-refundable travel.

ETIAS vs EES: Two Different Systems

Many travelers confuse ETIAS with the Entry/Exit System, or EES. They are linked but separate.

  • EES is already running. It started on October 12, 2025, and was fully rolled out by April 2026. It records non-EU travelers’ entries and exits digitally, using fingerprints and a facial image, and replaces passport stamps. There is no fee and nothing to apply for in advance.
  • ETIAS is a future pre-travel authorization that you will apply for online before you leave.

So if you visit Europe now, expect EES registration at the border on your first trip, which can mean longer queues at busy airports and ports, but no ETIAS.

What Happens When ETIAS Launches

Even after the EU sets a date, the change will not be sudden. EU rules allow for a transitional period, expected to last six months, when ETIAS is available but not mandatory, followed by a grace period for first-time travelers. That means there should be plenty of notice before anyone is refused boarding for not having one.

Advice for US, UK and Canadian travelers

  • Do not pay anyone for ETIAS now. More than 150 unofficial websites were reported to be offering it in 2026.
  • Bookmark the official source. The EU’s official ETIAS website will announce the start date.
  • Check your passport. For Schengen trips, UK passports must be less than 10 years old on the day you enter and valid for three months after you leave. US and Canadian travelers should also have at least three months of validity beyond departure.
  • Allow extra time at the border for EES registration on your first visit.

FAQ

Do Americans need ETIAS to visit Europe in 2026?

No. ETIAS is not operating yet, so US citizens can visit the Schengen area visa-free with a valid passport, as before.

Is ETIAS required for UK citizens?

Not yet. UK citizens will need it once it launches, but no start date has been confirmed.

How much will ETIAS cost?

EUR 20 per application, with no fee for applicants under 18 or over 70.

Final Thoughts

ETIAS will change how visa-exempt travelers prepare for Europe, but not yet. For now, focus on your passport validity and allow time for EES at the border. When the EU announces a start date, you will have months to apply online for EUR 20 through the official website. Until then, ignore anyone trying to sell you one.
